Rice Cooker Capacity Calculator: Which Pot Size Would I Pick?
This capacity calculator measures rice cooker size in uncooked 180 ml Japanese go (ๅ) cups, where 1 uncooked cup equals 3/4 of a standard US cup and makes about 2 bowls of cooked rice. I built the pot simulator below to show how daily meals, lunchboxes, and dinner guests actually fill a 3-cup, 5.5-cup, and 10-cup pot, plus which size I would pick for each household.

Adjust the household count, portion size, and kitchen habits to see how each pot fills up (including minimum and maximum go lines).
What I'd Pick: 10-Cup Uncooked (1.8 Liter / 10-Go)
For a daily batch of 4.2 uncooked rice cups (go) (3.2 standard US cups of dry rice, ~8 bowls) that reaches 6.7 go when guests come over, I would pick a 10-cup Micom like my Zojirushi NL-EAC18BA. In my kitchen, it handles both 2-cup weeknight batches and 10-cup dinner parties cleanly.
Reviewer's note: Why I don't recommend my 10-go size to a 2-person household:After I accidentally left rice inside my old 3-go Toshiba during a trip (after using it for just under a year) and it went moldy, I chose the 10-go Zojirushi NL-EAC18BA. I always cook at least 2 go (never 1 go), and between 2 go and 4 go there is no difference in flavor or texture at all, though cooking a larger batch makes the rice come out a bit softer. Even so, I would not recommend a 10-go cooker to a friend with a small 2-person family because it takes up a lot of counter space and the lid opens 90 degrees straight up (so it cannot open under an upper cabinet). Even for my family of four, the most I ever cook is 6 go, so I wish they made my exact cooker in a 4-go or 6-go size (which is why the 5.5-go NL-EAC10 is the sweet spot for smaller families).
Capacity Conversion Table: Japanese Go vs. US Cups
Keep this chart in mind when comparing boxes: Japanese and Korean brands (Zojirushi, Cuckoo, Tiger) state size in Uncooked 180 ml Go Cups. Budget US brands (Aroma, Dash) headline Cooked Cups.
| Cooker Size Class | Max Uncooked Rice (180ml Go Cups) | Max Uncooked Rice (240ml US Cups) | Max Brown Rice Limit | Cooked Yield (180ml Cups) | Best Household Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Cup Mini (Dash Mini) | 1 cup (180 ml) | 0.75 US cup | 0.5 cup (often foams over) | 2 cups | 1 person, dorm or office |
| 3-Cup Small (Zojirushi NS-LGC05) | 0.5 to 3 cups (540 ml) | 2.25 US cups | 2 cups | 6 cups | 1โ2 people, no guest hosting |
| "8-Cup Cooked" Budget (Aroma ARC-914SBD) | 1 to 4 cups (720 ml) | 3.0 US cups | 2.5 cups | 8 cups | 1โ3 people on an entry-level budget |
| 5.5-Cup / 6-Cup Standard (Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 / Cuckoo CR-0675F) | 1 to 5.5 / 6 cups (1.0L) | 4.1 to 4.5 US cups | 3.5 to 4 cups | 11 to 12 cups | 2โ4 people daily |
| 10-Cup Large (Zojirushi NL-EAC18BA) | 2 to 10 cups (1.8L, 2-go min) | 1.5 to 7.5 US cups | 2 to 7 cups | 4 to 20 cups | 3โ6+ people, meal preppers & guest hosts |
Common Questions
Why does capacity in a rice cooker refer to 180 ml cups instead of 240 ml US cups?
Japanese and Korean rice cookers measure size using the traditional Japanese go (ๅ) cup, which holds 180 ml (about 3/4 of a standard 240 ml US cup). One 180 ml cup of uncooked dry white rice makes roughly 2 standard rice bowls (about 360 to 400 ml cooked).
Will a 10-cup rice cooker ruin a small 2-cup batch of rice?
Not on a modern Fuzzy Logic (Micom) cooker like my Zojirushi NL-EAC18BA. It has a 2-cup (2-go) minimum water line, and in my daily home use, smaller everyday batches from 2 go and up cooked inside the 10-cup pot come out just as even and flavorful as big guest batches.
Why does an "8-Cup" Aroma cooker look smaller than a 5.5-Cup Zojirushi?
Because Aroma prints COOKED rice cups on the box, while Zojirushi prints UNCOOKED rice cups. An "8-Cup" Aroma ARC-914SBD only holds 4 uncooked cups, making it 27% smaller than a 5.5-cup Zojirushi.
